Excite Truck was one of the many pleasant surprises of the day. For some reason, I simply wasn't expected it to be as ridiculously fun as it was. That is the best way to sum up the Excite Truck experience - fun. It's also surprisingly difficult to get used to and become proficient - the manner in which you steer your truck is, at first, almost too responsive. Eventually we learned to become more subtle with the controller and thus began raking in the 'stars' - the points that you collect in order to progress.

Stars can be earned by drifting, crusing through trees, smashing into your foes, and launching yourself around in a crazy manner. One of the best aspects of the game is the '!' icon that you can drive over - hitting this item deforms the landscape in front of your eyes, and if used properly, can launch your rivals into the air, causing them to crash. It's an interesting, if gimmicky dynamic, and the effect is very well done.

The graphics are competent, and better than expected - the reflection-mapped water in particular looks nice, and the game is fairly sharp for a Wii game. The trucks themselves are modelled well, and the same fires along at such a furiously consistent pace that you barely have time to notice the minor graphical deficiencies in the landscape and fauna.

Whilst Excite Truck is undeniably fun, it also seems fairly shallow in terms of gameplay - admittedly whilst each race is likely to be different, thanks to the crazy handling and the items, the longevity of the game will probably become an issue after all of the tracks have been completed. Like a lot of Wii games, Excite Truck would be ideal for a party, or just for a quick race, but it certainly could not be described as a 'serious' racer in any way shape or form.

Fortunately, I don't care. Excite Truck is on my list.
